5-HTP for Anxiety -
Does It Really Work?
Does using 5-HTP for anxiety help to reduce the symptoms?
Research studies have shown the benefits of 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) in boosting serotonin levels in the brain. 5-HTP is a naturally occuring amino acid that the body uses to build protein. In addition, the body is able to convert 5 HTP to serotonin.
Low serotonin levels in the brain is linked to depression, generalized anxiety disorders, panic attack disorder, insomnia and increased appetite.
Lets see the scientific studies behind using 5-HTP specifically for anxiety and panic attacks...
Research
study on the health benefits of 5 HTP for anxiety
Earlier studies have discovered that a low level of serotonin in the brain increases the likelihood of a person to develop panic attacks. By taking the supplement 5-HTP, it allows for more serotonin to be made.
The two clinical studies discussed below seem to prove the benefits of 5-HTP for anxiety and panic disorders.
Study #1
Acute L-5-hydroxytryptophan administration inhibits carbon dioxide-induced panic in panic disorder patients.
Schruers K, van Diest R, Overbeek T, Griez E.
Psychiatry Res. 2002 Dec 30;113(3):237-43. |
48 volunteers were subjected to high concentration of carbon dioxide gas. Half of these volunteers suffered from panic attacks and the other half did not.
By taking 200 mg of 5-HTP, it significantly reduced the severity of the panic attacks in those with an existing history of panic attack disorder.
Note that it made no difference to those who don't have a history of panic disorders (not too suprisingly really).
Study #2
Effect of a serotonin precursor and uptake inhibitor in anxiety disorders; a double-blind comparison of 5-hydroxytryptophan, clomipramine and placebo.
Kahn RS, Westenberg HG, Verhoeven WM, Gispen-de Wied CC, Kamerbeek WD.Int Clin Psychopharmacol. 1987 Jan;2(1):33-45. |
In this small but well-designed clinical study with 45 volunteers, the researchers clearly showed that taking 5-hydroxytryptophan is effective for reducing anxiety and panic attacks.
As would be expected, it is not quite as effective as the prescription medication clomipramine.
They concluded that a low level of the neurotransmitter serotonin is partly responsible for the cause of anxiety disorders, especially panic attacks and agoraphobia (fear of open spaces such as a fear of being caught alone in some public place).
Dose to use
Experts suggest using 50 to 100 mg up to three times daily. Start with a lower dose and increase gradually to avoid side effects such as nausea.
Clinical trials have used 5-HTP for depression with dosages ranging from 150 mg to 300 mg daily (in divided doses).
If you are currently on prescription antidepressant medications, consult with your healthcare professional first before starting 5-HTP.
Bottom Line?
There is enough scientific evidence to show that taking 5-HTP for anxiety disorder and panic attacks would reduce the symptoms. It does so, in part, by boosting serotonin levels in the brain.
