Astaxanthin for Skin Health - Does It Work?

Is there evidence using astaxanthin for skin health actually works?

astaxanthin for skin care wrinklesThere is significant interest in finding ways of maintaining beauty skin.

In addition to a proper diet as well as keeping the skin moisturized, anti-oxidant protection is a necessary addition to any skin care products.

The article Benefits of Astaxanthin reviewed all the health benefits of this antioxidant molecule so we won't talk about them in this article.

Let's focus the discussion on skin health...

Benefits of using Astaxanthin for Skin Health and Wrinkles

Antioxidants like coenzyme Q10, vitamin C and astaxanthin seem to be play a major role in preventing damage to the skin caused by UV radiations from sunlight exposure.

Photo-aging occurs when you expose your skin to excessive amounts of UV rays. UV ray creates oxygen free radicals (reactive oxygen species or ROS) that degrade the collagen that forms the foundation for the skin.

Reducing collagen reduces the skin elasticity and causes the formation of fine line and wrinkles.

Lab and animal studies seem to support the use of astaxanthin for reversing wrinkles by absorbing these highly reactive and damaging oxygen free radicals.

Small clinical trials done in Japan showed reduction in wrinkles in four to six weeks. These results were seen both when astaxanthin was applied to the skin and when the subjects took it as a supplement.

Astaxanthin skin anti-aging dose to use

Based on clinical research studies done in Japan by Yamashita (and others), a dose of 2 mg daily seems to be effective. Results appeared between 2 to 4 weeks.

Another study showed that 4 mg daily resulted in improved moisture, increased elasticity and reduced wrinkles and fine lines. These results were confirmed by dermatological skin surface photographs.

Why not conduct a research study on the most important person that really matters? You.

With today's low-cost digital camera, you can take before and after close-up photographs of the wrinkles on your face to truly find out if it works in your particular case.

Show these pictures to someone who do not know you and ask them which picture shows less wrinkles. (Of course, don't tell them which picture is the before or after shot!)

Don't forget that using other antioxidants like coenzyme Q10 for skin health can reduce the effects of photo-aged skin as well.
