Benefits of Coffee and Tea in
Preventing Heart Disease
February 28, 2010
What do we know
about the health benefits of coffee and tea?
It
is known from past research that healthy substances are contained in
coffee and green tea (such as antioxidants) that can protect against common health problems
like type 2 diabetes.
We are starting to recognize the health benefits
from drinking these perennially favorite beverages around the world.
A recently
published clinical study looked at 76,979
Japanese men and women between the ages of 40 to 79 to see if drinking
these beverages can reduce heart
disease.
The bottom line? It does! The researchers concluded that drinking
coffee, green tea and oolong tea and total caffeine intake reduces
heart disease risk by 38% in men and 22% in women. How much do you have
to drink to get this benefit? About 1 to 2 cups daily, although drinking 3 or more cups daily decreases the risk slightly more.
This is one of many such studies proving the health benefits of coffee. There are also studies that strongly support coffee and tea in preventing diabetes as well.
Do we suggest for you to start drinking coffee or tea as a means to
prevent heart disease? Hardly. There are many other more effective ways in
prevent heart disease as outlined in our
article on heart disease. However, if you currently drink
coffee or tea, rest assured that your body will benefit from this.
