Benefits of Lysine
What are the
benefits of lysine? Does it really help treat cold sores and genital
herpes and other viral infections?
Lysine creams and gels as well as lysine
supplements are shown to be helpful in shortening the outbreaks and
cutting down on
the severity of both cold sores (herpes simplex virus) and genital
herpes.
As well, there are some smaller studies to show that it might
be helpful in treating warts
as well since it is also a viral infection.
Lysine
is an amino acid that your body is able to make and you can easily get
it from your diet. Lysine is used by your body to make proteins.
Research Findings
Many
studies done in volunteers suffering from cold sores, canker sores and
genital herpes show that lysine can help to cut down on the length of
the active infection stage. The studies also revealed reduced severity
and the number of outbreaks.
Lysine stops the growth of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in lab studies.
Of course, keep in mind that there
are some studies that also show that taking L-lysine supplements made
no difference at all. (This can be expected in practically all research
studies. What to look out for are more positive results than negative
results.)
In the studies that showed positive results, about 80%
of the volunteers experienced significant health benefits from using
this amino acid in treating their viral infections.
Can I get all the L-lysine I will
need from my diet?
Indeed,
it is possible. Lysine rich foods include dairy products, fruits and
vegetables, chicken, fish, avocados, eggs and brewer’s yeast. It may be
difficult to tell how much you are getting on a daily basis so a lysine
supplement can ensure that you get enough and the same amount of it on
a daily basis.

How do I know if it works?
If you keep
track of the numbers of outbreaks and take notes on the
severity of the outbreaks, then you can find out how helpful it is. Use
the cream and/or take the supplements several months before giving up.
If you only get outbreaks once a year or twice a year, it
may be difficult to say if it helps to reduce the number of outbreaks. But, if it is severe or lasts a long time, taking lysine supplements
and using lysine creams or gels may stop the viral in its track and
make the outbreaks less severe and also speed up the healing process.
