Research Studies for Coenzyme Q10 for Diabetes

Here is one study that looked at what coenzyme Q10 supplement did for diabetic patients:

Complementary therapy in diabetic patients with chronic complications: a pilot study.
Palacka P, Kucharska J, Murin J, Dostalova K, Okkelova A, Cizova M, Waczulikova I, Moricova S, Gvozdjakova A.
Bratisl Lek Listy. 2010;111(4):205-11.

The researchers wanted to find out if taking 60 mg of CoQ10 along with alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) and 200 mg of vitamin E helped to prevent complications of type 2 diabetes.

A very common complication from uncontrolled high blood sugar levels is diabetic ulcers in the legs.

The results from this study of 59 patients showed that taking CoQ10 supplements (along with the others) and light therapy is "an effective way of controlling the complications of type 2 diabetes".

Another study involving 28 volunteers showed the relationship between diabetic patients and coenzyme Q10 levels in the blood:

Malondialdehyde and coenzyme Q10 in platelets and serum in type 2 diabetes mellitus: correlation with glycemic control.
El-ghoroury EA, Raslan HM, Badawy EA, El-Saaid GS, Agybi MH, Siam I, Salem SI.
Blood Coagul Fibrinolysis. 2009 Jun;20(4):248-51.

Diabetics seem to have lower levels of CoQ10 in their blood.

It is known that oenzyme Q10 is a potent antioxidant. People suffering from high blood sugar levels have higher levels of oxidative stress. Excessive oxidative stress causes the body to use up more of this essential vitamin-like substance.

This low level of CoQ10 exposes their body to greater cell damage by these oxygen free radical molecules.

Bottom Line?

So CoQ10 does not lower blood sugar levels in diabetics but offers the needed oxidative protection that comes from having high blood sugar levels. It can reduce and delay the complications of diabetes.
