CoQ10 for Eyes
Does using CoQ10 for eyes help to reduce the risk of cataracts? What about macular degeneration?
Coenzyme Q10 is essential for energy generation by every cell in our body. It also has potent antioxidant effects. In part, the development of cataract starts with oxidative stress on the lens.
This eventually causes the cells to break down and clouding of the lens occurs.
For those individuals suffering from cataract or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an “eye vitamin” rich in antioxidants are often recommended. But you seldom hear health care professionals making recommendations to take a CoQ10 supplement.

Feher J, et al. (Ophthalmologica. 2005 May-Jun;219(3):154-66.)In this study, the researchers showed that taking antioxidants such as omega-3 fatty acids, L-carnitine and coenzyme Q10 help to reduce the risk of macular degeneration.
Another study showed that the CoQ10 levels in the retina can decline by up to 40% with age. The experts suspect that reduced antioxidant protection from coenzyme Q10 can lead to the development of macular degeneration. Here’s the reference to this study.
