CoQ10 for Gum Disease - Does It Work?
Should I use CoQ10 for gum disease and gingivitis?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is well known for its beneficial use in the prevention of heart disease. Indeed, low levels of CoQ10 is implicated in many health problems, including gingivitis.
All the benefits of CoQ10 can be found in the article Benefits of Coenzyme Q10 so we will focus our attention on research studies on using this vitamin-like substance for treating gum disease...
Recommendations on CoQ10 for gingivitis treatment
CoQ10 has been suggested as an effective natural supplement to help fight off periodontal diseases such as gingivitis.
Indeed, researchers found that gums affected with gingivitis had significantly lower amounts of CoQ10.
CoQ10 is needed for energy generation and tissue regeneration requires a lot of energy. So it makes logical sense to supply gum tissues with enough CoQ10 to allow them to "do their job and heal".
This was found to be the case. Even a low dose of 50 mg daily of CoQ10 significantly reduced inflammation around the gum lines.
Another study showed that applying CoQ10 suspended in soybean oil to the gum reduced bleeding and the depth of the gingival pockets. This study used a concentration of 85 mg/mL applied once weekly.
So now we know.
Brushing and flossing are essential to gum health but it seems that taking a CoQ10 supplement might be an excellent step to further improve gum health.
Bottom Line
Clinical studies show that taking CoQ10 for gingivitis can reduce the inflammation. Dose as low as 50 mg per day was shown to be beneficial. Take 100 mg once daily.
Applying a CoQ10 liquid to the gum lines also helped to reduce bleeding from gingivitis.
