CoQ10 For Tinnitus - Does It Work?

Does it help to take CoQ10 for tinnitus?

There is good evidence that hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) are both caused, in part, by oxidative damage to the sound sensing nerves inside ears. Other experts believe it may also be due to poor or low blood circulation to the these nerves.

CoQ10 is an antioxidant that helps to prevent free oxygen radicals from damaging these sensitive nerve structures. (See Health Benefits of CoQ10 for a complete list of all the disease this vitamin-like substance can be used for.)

But is there any clinical study to show that taking CoQ10 supplements can help to reduce tinnitus? Read on for the discussion...

Benefits of CoQ10 for tinnitus - What one study shows

Here is the reference on one clinical study that looked at using CoQ10 supplements for the treatment of tinnitus:

A pilot clinical trial of the effects of coenzyme Q10 on chronic tinnitus aurium.
Khan M, et al.
Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2007 Jan;136(1):72-7.

This is a small study involving 20 subjects suffering from tinnitus. The researchers undertook a 16 weeks study to find out how effective CoQ10 supplementation would be in reducing tinnitus.

Their conclusion was that it didn't seem to have any effect on tinnitus on average.

But, the interesting thing is that in seven subjects who had low CoQ10 blood levels at the beginning of the study, taking the supplement actually worked to reduce their tinnitus symptoms.

We suggest taking 100 mg twice daily of a CoQ10 supplement. Other natural supplements that work for tinnitus include Pycnogenol and ginkgo biloba.

Side Bar - Ideally, get your CoQ10 levels measured to find out if you are deficient. Otherwise you would never know. This is not a test normal diagnostic labs can perform and it cost around $150 to $250 plus the cost of collecting and shipping your blood to the labs.

Bottom Line

There is evidence that oxidative damage is partially responsible for causing tinnitus. CoQ10, being a potent antioxidant, may provide the needed protection against oxidative stress.

CoQ10 supplements can be effective in individuals with low CoQ10 levels for reducing tinnitus.

It may not help individuals with tinnitus if their CoQ10 levels are normal.

Super Ubiquinol can be safely used together for an enhanced benefit.
