Erectile
Dysfunction (ED) or Impotence
What is ED?
Erectile
Dysfunction, also known as ED or impotence, is a
health condition when a man is unable
to keep
the penis stiff enough for a long enough time to allow
for normal
sexual intercourse. A man may experience impotence from time to time as
there are many physical and psychological factors that are
involved. However, it is when a man suffers from impotence
chronically (all or most of the time) that it becomes a problem that
needs to be treated.
The chemistry and the process of allowing
the penis to become firm is complicated and involves the combination of
brain stimulation, blood flow into penile tissue, nitric oxide
levels, nerve functions and male hormone levels. Any imbalance in any
of these factors will prevent a male from achieving a full erection. In
order for an erection to occur, a man requires either mental (sexual)
or physical stimulation (usually of the penis).
The fact is, an estimated 10 to 20 million American men suffer from
complete ED. Most of these men are over the age of 65 years. Plus an
additional 10 million Americans experience some level of ED.
Fixing
erectile dysfunction may be as simple as finding and controlling causes
such as stress and anxiety. Or curing ED may be as difficult as
figuring out how to reverse the damage caused by years of not looking
after
your diabetes and heart disease.
