What
are the health benefits of oatmeal?
It is proven through extensive research studies that eating oatmeal
helps to reduce the risk of heart disease and lowers high cholesterol.
As it is high in soluble
fiber (oat bran), it lowers the "bad" cholesterol (LDL). It is
shown to help in diabetes by lowering the 24 hour blood glucose levels
and reduce insulin needs. Moreover, population studies show that a diet
high
in fiber seems to lower the risk of stomach cancer.
Pharmacist
Tom's recommendations: Find your favorite brand and add it
to your diet. Today, in our typical North American diet, we tend to eat
foods high in sugar, high in fat and low in fiber.
It should not be surprising that heart diseases, diabetes, and most
other diseases as well are on the rise.

What
are the health benefits of avocados?
Scientific studies suggest that eating a diet high in avocados is
effective in treating high
cholesterol, osteoarthritis
and
possibly
other types of arthritis as well. The high fiber content in avocados is
what helps with lowering your "bad" cholesterol. It is a rich source of
monounsaturated oils such as linoleic acid.
Historically, avocados are used to treat high cholesterol, arthritis, low libido
(sex drive), psoriasis, healing wounds, cancer, eczema, diarrhea, nerve
pain, gout, hair loss, various skin conditions and gum disease.
Pharmacist
Tom's recommendations:
If you love eating avocados and
have either osteoarthritis or high cholesterol, feel good about it! It
will be a match made on earth (and it will keep you away from heaven
for as long as possible). It's also promoted to help increase sex drive
(some believe it has aphrodisiac properties).

What
are the health benefits of pineapple?
Pineapple contains a powerful enzyme called bromelain
which is shown to
help with osteoarthritis,
arthritis and sports injuries.
It is also useful for treating ulcerative colitis and stomach problems
such as upset stomach, heartburn and other digestive problems.
Pharmacist
Tom's recommendations: If you suffer from arthritis
(osteoarthritis
and rheumatoid arthritis), it is worth giving bromelain
a try. Taking the enzyme is better than eating pineapple because
you get more of the supplement and you will know the exact amount you
are taking.

What
are the health benefits of blueberries?
Blueberry is a close relative of bilberry. It is used by
people
traditionally to treat hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis),
night vision problems, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes and painful
menstruation (dysmenorrhea).
Pharmacist
Tom's recommendations:
The research done on bilberry doesn't provide convincing proof that it
can help with night vision problems in health people. However, a study
did show that taking bilberry improved night vision in those diabetic
people suffering from vision problems.
Another
study showed that taking blueberries 3 days before the start of
menstruation significantly helped with reducing pain, breast
tenderness, nausea and vomiting and a feeling of abdominal heaviness.
It is worth trying to see if this helps with painful menstruation. You
will know easily if it helps with your condition or not.
The other traditionally uses of bilberry don't seem to be support by
scientific studies, unfortunately. Nevertheless, berry fruits are good
for your
health so do include them in your diet. They are high in antioxidants
and will protect your cells against free-radical damage.
