How to Stop Coughing
Find
out how to stop
coughing using natural cough remedies. Coughing
can be more than annoying. It can be inconvenient, embarrassing and
painful if the cough gets out of hand or happens at the wrong time.
Coughing
can be voluntary (which you can control) and involuntary (which you
cannot control). Often when something irritating stimulates cough
receptors found in many places of the airway and lungs, it sends a
message to the cough center in the brain. This will trigger muscles
that
cause you to cough.
A cough may produce mucus but that is not
always the case. Coughing up phlegm may indicate a bacterial infection
if it is greenish or yellowish in color (but may not always be the
case).
Usually an infection by a virus or bacteria may be
responsible for causing the cough but other times, medication use,
smoking, asthma and allergies can cause this annoying problem.
How to stop coughing
using home
remedies
Humidification
Use a cool or
warm mist humidifier, especially in the bedroom. Dry
air is irritating to the throat and can worsen coughing. This is a vey
common and highly recommended method of controlling cough, especially
if it is caused by a viral infection such as the dreaded common cold or the flu.
Drink
Water
Drink water
regularly. You are better off taking sips of water rather
than drinking all of it at once. It will keep your throat moist. This
is particularly important if you are giving a speech or talking during
a meeting.
Honey
and Lemon
Make a cup of
warm tea and add a slice of lemon or lemon juice and
one or two tablespoon of honey. Honey is shown to help stop coughing
and soothe the irritated throat.
Honey
and Milk
Warm up a
glass of milk and add one or two tablespoonful of honey. Drink before
going to bed.
Peppermint
Mints
Chew on a
peppermint mint when you feel the urge to cough. As well, peppermint
causes your mouth to produce saliva and the act of swallowing helps to
reduce the irritation in the throat.
Ginger
Chew on a
slice of ginger to reduce your urge to cough. It works similarly to
having peppermint mints in your mouth.
Apple Cider Vinegar
It has been
suggested that apple cider vinegar can be used to stop a
cough. Add one or two teaspoons (5 to 10 mL) of apple cider vinegar
into a glass of
warm water and drink it slowly.
