Kidney Stones Symptoms
Kidney Stones Symptoms -
What could they be?
Many people do not know this but there are several different types of
kidney stones. Among those types, the most common that most people get
is calcium oxalate stones.
The others are "struvite stones," "uric acid stones," and "cystine
stones." These types differ depending on what the cause is from and
their characteristics.
Knowing what type of kidney stones develop in the body will also help
you do the things that will prevent their formation in your body
system.
Kidney Stones Symptoms
In order to determine if one is suffering from kidney stones, here are
some signs and symptoms:
1. Pain - Pain in
varying levels is one of the major warning signs of kidney stones. The
amount of pain a person experience varies depending on the size of the
kidney stone and the length of time that it remains undiagnosed.
This is because as the stone increases in size and weight, attempting
to pass the stone becomes more and more difficult to do. The ureter
(the tube which allows the urine to flow from the kidney to the
bladder) is designed to pass urine which is a liquid. It is never
designed to pass any solid objects like a kidney stone!
Another form of pain due to kidney stones is from renal colic, which
causes waves of severe pain that lasts for more than 10 minutes and can
even last for about an hour depending on the location of the kidney
stone.
2. Blood in the urine
(hematuria) - The presence of blood in the urine is quite scary
but this is one of the most common sign of kidney stones.
3. Nausea and vomiting
- There may be the symptoms of nausea and vomiting which are associated
with the pain of having a kidney stone.
4. Painful urination and
urgency - Pain during urination, and possibly, the urgency to
urinate are usually seen in children and adults.
The importance of proper
diagnosis
Almost 50 percent of the people who suffer from kidney stones would
likely get it again in the next 10 years. Why is this? Many people do
not make the necessary diet or lifestyle changes to prevent it from
coming back again.
People who are likely to suffer from kidney stones can go to any
hospital's Emergency Room or "ER" for prompt attention.
Diagnosis can be done through an assessment of the person's clinical
history, a physical examination, laboratory evaluation, and x-ray for
follow up. Having early diagnosis can definitely help you determine
which type of kidney stone is present and would lead to faster and
reliable treatments.
