L-Arginine for Fertility - Does It
Thinking of using L-arginine for fertility enhancement?
There has been interest in using L-arginine to help enhance fertility in men and women.
This interest came from breeding experiments showing that animals given arginine supplements were able to increase their sperm motility and quality.
The question remains if this benefit can be seen in humans.
The discussion below will look at some of the research studies to support using this amino acid for enhancing sperm quality in men as well as improving the quality of the ovum in women...
studies on using L-arginine for fertility in men
There are three clinical trials we will discuss showing that taking L-arginine does increase measures of sperm quality and motility.
L-arginine and male infertility.
Scibona M, Meschini P, et al.
Minerva Urol Nefrol. 1994 Dec;46(4):251-3.
This earlier study showed that L-arginine supplement can boost sperm motility in men who suffer from infertility.
Moreover, the researchers noted that no side effects were reported in this small study involving 40 male volunteers.
Treatment with carnitine, acetyl carnitine, L-arginine and ginseng improves sperm motility and sexual health in men with asthenopermia.
Morgante G, Scolaro V, Tosti C, et al.
Minerva Urol Nefrol. 2010 Sep;62(3):213-8.
A more recent study using a combination of L-arginine, ginseng and carnitine showed significant improvements in both sperm motility and low sex drive.
The researchers believed that the boost in sex drive was due to the addition of ginseng to the formula.
This study further confirmed previous animal and human research findings on the effectiveness of arginine for enhancing fertility.
But what about the use L-arginine in women for enhancing their fertility? Are there any studies to show that a woman can benefit from taking this amino acid as well?
The answer can be found in the study below.
Adjuvant L-arginine treatment for in-vitro fertilization in poor responder patients.
Battaglia C, Salvatori M, Maxia N, et al.
Hum Reprod. 1999 Jul;14(7):1690-7.
Thirty four women undergoing IVF (in vitro fertilization) volunteered for this study. In the group given L-arginine supplement, the researchers were able to collect more eggs and there were 3 pregnancies. (The other control group not taking L arginine had no pregnancy.)
This small study seems to show that L-arginine supplement can boost fertility rate in women who responded poorly to IVF.
From these research studies, it appears that both men and women can benefit from arginine supplements in enhancing fertility to increase the chances of getting pregnant.
What is a suitable dose of L-arginine for fertility enhancement?
Based on clinical studies, a dose of 2,000 mg (2 grams) once or twice daily seems to be a good starting dose to use for men.
Moreover, men suffering from low sex drive can realize additional benefits as L-arginine also has aphrodisiac properties.
For women, researchers used a dose of 16 grams daily to boost fertility in women who have failed to conceive using IVF (in vitro fertilization) techniques. Consult your doctor if you plan on taking L-arginine.
Thinking of taking L-arginine for fertility enhancement? Clinical studies show that it works in men. As an added benefit, it also boosts sex drive.
Start with 2,000 mg once daily and increase it to twice daily as desired.
Women planning to use L-arginine to enhance fertility should consult their doctor.
Natural remedies such as maca, coenzyme Q10 and melatonin, vitamin B12 and zinc are also shown to enhance fertility as well and they are worth considering.
