Pycnogenol for Tinnitus - Does It Really Work?

Discover if using Pycnogenol for tinnitus really reduces the symptoms.

Tinnitus is a chronic and annoying health condition in which a person suffers from humming, buzzing or ringing sounds in one or both ears. It is more likely to occur in older people but younger individuals can also be affected.

The exact cause is unknown but high blood pressure, poor circulation, exposure to loud noises and some medication may be responsible.

There is no effective prescription treatment for tinnitus but many natural remedies have been suggested to be helpful. Pycnogenol is one of them.

Research studies on using Pycnogenol for tinnitus relief

We have found one study done at the Chieti-Pescara University in Italy on the effectiveness of using Pycnogenol for tinnitus. The reference is listed below:

Improvement in cochlear flow with Pycnogenol in patients with tinnitus: a pilot evaluation.
Grossi MG, Belcaro G, Cesarone MR, et al.
Panminerva Med. 2010 Jun;52(2 Suppl 1):63-7.

Fifty-eight patients were given 150 mg daily of Pycnogenol and thirty-four were given 100 mg daily for 34 days.

All these volunteers suffered from mild to moderate tinnitus that appeared suddenly from an unknown cause.

To avoid any risk of the placebo effect, twenty-four volunteers were given a look-alike "sugar pill".

The results? Volunteers given either dose of Pycnogenol showed significant improvements in blood flow in the inner ears. Some of them got some relief from tinnitus symptoms.

Moreover, none of the volunteers reported any side effects, showing that Pycnogenol is very well tolerated.

No doubt, we would like to see more clinical studies done (and so would everyone else). This particular study verifies that poor circulation to the inner ear can be responsible for causing tinnitus in some people.

This positive finding is consistent with what some experts believe to be a possible cause of tinnitus (poor circulation in the inner ears).

Bottom line

Should I consider using Pycnogenol for tinnitus relief?

Yes, it is definitely worth trying out. Use 100 to 150 mg daily. It is more effective than taking 100 mg daily and benefits can be expected in less than 30 days of treatment.

Also consider using CoQ10 for tinnitus as well as trying out ginkgo for tinnitus relief as well.
