CoQ10 for Heart Problems – Do You Think It Really Helps?

There is extensive clinical evidence to prove that people suffering from heart disease can benefit a great deal from taking a coenzyme Q10 supplement. The energy requirement of the heart muscle is very large and continuous. CoQ10 is a required molecule for energy generation by every cell in our body.

Studies even show that those who are at risk of developing heart problems and those taking prescription “statin” type high cholesterol medication will experience significant positive health benefits from even a low dose of 60 mg daily.

The complete review Health Benefits of Coenzyme Q10 talks about all the benefits of CoQ10 so we won’t mention all of them here.

For example, clinical studies have shown that CoQ10 supplement improved the ability for the heart to pump blood. Studies also show that taking CoQ10 after suffering a first heart attack reduces the risk of developing a second heart attack.

Moreover, coenzyme Q10 has been shown to lower high blood pressure and reduce oxidation of fats that leads to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

We would say that CoQ10 is a “must-take” supplement for anyone who have heart problems or at risk of developing it. What are some risk factors for having heart problems? It would include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar (diabetes) and obesity.

Recommended Dose of CoQ10 for heart problems

The dose will vary depending on the severity of the heart disease. A dose as low as 60 mg daily was shown to be helpful. Dose can go as high as 900 mg daily for those suffering from advanced heart failure.

Coenzyme Q10 for Heart Attack - Does It Help?

Does taking coenzyme Q10 for heart attack help to protect the heart muscle from further damage?

Coenzyme Q10 is proven in clinical trials to support heart muscle function. This is especially true if a person suffers from cardiovascular disease such as congestive heart failure, blocked arteries (from fatty deposits caused by high cholesterol) and high blood pressure.

After a heart attack, a person is more likely to get another one. This is the reason why doctors prescribe many prescription medications afterwards. The purpose is to reduce the risk of a second heart attack.

The complete review Health Benefits of Coenzyme Q10 talks about all the benefits of CoQ10 so we won’t mention them here.

Clinical research has shown that a person who took CoQ10 for heart attack within 3 days were significantly less likely to get another one. Moreover, they suffered less chest pain (angina) as well.

And more importantly, those who took the coenzyme Q10 supplement were less likely to die of heart disease than those who did not take the supplement.

We would say that CoQ10 is a “must-take” supplement for anyone who had a heart attack.

Recommended Dose of CoQ10 for heart protection

Research studies used 60 mg twice daily for heart attack victims. A higher dose of 100 mg twice daily (or 200 mg daily) is recommended by many experts. CoQ10 side effects are minimal and it is very well tolerated.

Coenzyme Q-10 and Thyroid Hormones Levels

by Vibeke Leth
(Denmark)

CoQ10 is suspected to change thyroid levels, especially if you are taking thyroid supplements

I can confirm this! No need just to suspect this. It is real!

I have my thyroid gland removed so I am taking Euthyrox the thyroid hormone replacement. Being advised to take Q-10 due to a feeling of fatigue I suddenly got severe problems with quivering and dizziness as my thyroid hormone balance was off track. This was a very scary experience and I stopped taking the Q-10 and the problems disappeared!

Editor

Thank you for confirming this in your particular case.

Indeed, what you experienced is very severe and unfortunate.

CoQ10 could elevate thyroid levels. In theory, it may be more likely to happen in individuals suffering for thyroid disorder than in healthy individuals.

This may be the case why you experienced such rapid and severe symptoms.

If this was always the case, then most people taking CoQ10 would experience the symptoms you described. In fact, most do not.

As always, those who have health conditions should always consult their family doctor to ensure that supplements (even those that have little side effects) do not interfere with existing health problems.

You did the right thing to stop CoQ10. Hopefully your energy level is at an acceptable level to you.

If, at a future date, you wish to start on CoQ10, your thyroid medication can be adjusted downwards accordingly as you go on CoQ10.

Again, your serum CoQ10 level might be normal and you will not need to take any CoQ10 supplements.

Best wishes to your health.
