Resveratrol

About resveratrol - Before
you go tell your friends "I drink red wine to reduce my chance
of getting heart disease", you should know that to get that amount from
wine, you'll be drinking hundreds of glasses of wine every day. Not a
good idea at all.
If you
currently drink moderately (1 glass a day, perhaps), we can't deny that
there's got to be some benefit somewhere. After all, the French people
are benefiting from a lower incidence of heart disease!

Facts
and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is it?
This naturally
occurring chemical is an anti-oxidant
found in nature and foods.
What other names is it known by?
It may be
referred to red wine extract or wine pill.
What
are some food sources of resveratrol?
This natural
antioxidant
is found in plants including peanuts, grapes and red wine.
White wine has less resveratrol than red wine (due to the way white
wine is made). The best source of getting the amount you would like is
from a pill.
How much resveratrol is found in
wine?
A typical
glass (240 mL) of red wine contains around 640 mcg
(microgram) or 0.6 mg (milligrams).
I've heard that drinking red wine
daily is good
for heart health?
The French
Paradox: In France, a country where people drink more red
wine than other
countries, heart disease is lower. This fact has lead to the belief
that red wine consumption was the reason.
Indeed, several population studies show that a glass of red
wine daily seems to give protection against heart
related diseases.
Animal
studies showed that this anti-oxidant "thins" the blood out a little
(much like what Aspirin does) and keeps the blood vessels healthy.
Unfortunately, there are no studies done in humans as of yet to prove
the heart health benefits of this taking this supplement. (All evidence
comes from population studies only.)
What about resveratrol curing cancer?
Firstly,
lab and animal studies do show that this supplement can prevent certain
types of cancer. However, the dose used is incredibly high. Studies
used around 500 mg of this supplement.
A glass of wine contains about
0.64 mg (640 mcg). You'd have to drink about 900 glasses of wine to get
that amount from wine (!!)
Side
Effects, Toxicity
and Warnings
There are no
reported side effects of taking this supplement in the
doses found in food, red wine or in natural supplements. It is a safe
supplement to take.
Dosage & How
to Take It
Unfortunately,
there is no typical dose used and it is not known what
is a "good" dose to use in humans. Animal studies used ridiculously
high doses (over 1,000 times higher than in humans when adjusted for
body weight of the rat).
Typical
supplement you can buy contain
anywhere from 200 to 600 mg per pill. Some supplements
also combine resveratrol with grape seed extract (which also has
antioxidant benefits).
