Safe to use nattokinase with warfarin and heart medications?

by Joanne
(New York)

My husband is thinking of taking nattokinase as a friend recommended it for arthritis and high blood pressure. He is currently on warfarin and wants to use this herb but upon reading your review, it said there might be some dangers for someone who is using a blood-thinner.

Some background. He got a mild heart attack back in 2004 and is on warfarin, Atacand, furosemide and Norvasc. The doctor put him on warfarin to cut down the danger of clots because his heart beat is not regular.

I told him that there are better herbs to use for his arthritis and high blood pressure but he might want to take nattokinase anyways.

Is this alright? Can it be dangerous?

Dangers of Nattokinase to be concerned about
by: Tom

Nattokinase may not be the best option for your husband if he intends to use it to treat high blood pressure and arthritis.

Glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin offers greater benefit with good scientific evidence of effectiveness. For high blood pressure consider coenzyme Q10. CoQ10 is also helpful for his heart condition as well.

The dangers with nattokinase is that it seems to act like a blood-thinner. Combining it with warfarin can lead to excessive bleeding. There was one reported case, but perhaps many are not reported or documented.

Your husband needs to let his doctor know if he insist on trying nattokinase. He can get regular blood test for his INR levels to see it changes and the doctor can make appropriate adjustment to his warfarin levels. Again, this MUST be done under the direct supervision of his family doctor.

Do NOT stop taking warfarin or start nattokinase without consulting with a doctor.
