Benefits
of Soy Isoflavones in Preventing Lung Cancer
February 16, 2010
Soy Isoflavones or simply referred to as isoflavones are known to be
helpful in treating
menopause
symptoms as they show estrogen-like properties. It is suspected by
experts that it might have anti-cancer effect but no properly designed
clinical studies were done to show this benefit until now.
A
research group out of Japan spent around 11 years to monitor 36,177 men
and 40,484 women aged 45 to 74 years old. The researchers found that
those men with the highest intake from food sources have the
lowerest risk of getting lung cancer.
However, high intake of isoflavones did not have any effect in reducing lung cancer risk in
smoking men. It also did not seem to affect the risk in women.
It
can be difficult to recommend a diet change nor can we clearly say
eating soy-rich foods or taking supplements can help prevent lung
cancer since it is possible that other factors may be involved (which
the researchers could not take into account). For example, those men
who eat soy-rich foods may also exercise more as they might be more
health conscious.
Expect more health benefits of isoflavones to be revealed in
future
research studies!
