Are there any
warning signs?
In
some people, they do get "warning" signs called an aura. These could
include sensations of lights, blind spots and tingling feeling in the
arms or legs. The aura can happen 15 to 30 minutes prior to the
beginning of the migraine attack.
As well, some people may experience cravings for sweets, become
depressed, excited, irritable or drowsy several hours to a day before
the migraine attack. These symptoms that happen before the attack are
called prodrome.
How long does
it last and how often does it occur?
Typically,
it can last for several minutes to several days. Some people get it
several times per week while others may only experience it once a year or less.
What causes
migraine attacks?
Experts
do not know exactly what causes them. Migraines seem to involve an
imbalance in neurotransmitters in the brain, causing the blood
vessels to dialate. This stretching of the blood vessels stimulates
nerves and is believed to be the cause of the severe pain.
It is known that the levels of serotonin, a type of neurotransmitter, go
down during an episode of migraine attack.
