What are the health benefits of coconut oil in weight loss?

Has anyone tried using coconut oil for weight loss with success? A friend suggested that I try it. She doesn't use it (if you've seen her, you'll know that she doesn't need to loose any weight!)



I know it's good for the skin and hair but would like to hear from those who have tried it.

Does Coconut Oil Help You Lose Weight?

There is a lot of talk and interest in using coconut oil to help you lose weight. Why is that? Animal studies show that coconut oil affects energy and fat metabolism to help promote weight loss.

A two week study well-designed study done in rats showed that short-chained fatty acids (such as found in coconut oil) and butter changes fat metabolism that can cause weight loss.

But, and this is the big question, there are no studies to directly show that it actually causes a reduction in body weight in humans.

The Bad News
Here's the bad news, taking coconut oil is shown to increase cholesterol in most studies. Initially it was thought that coconut oil helped prevent heart disease because the Polynesians experienced less heart disease and their diet was quite high in coconut oil.

The Good News
Studies done in lab settings show that coconut oil has antibacterial and antiviral benefits. It is shown to regulate the immune system and could be used to prevent or treat various forms of infections.
