What is CoQ10 For?
What is CoQ10 for? And Why is it so popular?
Since
being discovered over 40
years ago, extensive clinical studies show that CoQ10 plays a
significant role in preventing disease and promoting total health.
Also
known as coenzyme Q10, ubiquinone or ubiquinol, this substance is
similar to vitamin K and is fat-soluble compound. The body needs
coenzyme Q10 for energy generation. It is found in high
concentrations in mitochondria (energy production structure found
inside cells), liver, kidneys, lungs and heart.
If the body does
not have access to enough of this coenzyme, it will limit the ability
for the body to generate the needed energy. But it's not just about
energy generation. CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant as well, protecting
the body against the damages caused by oxygen free-radicals.
Health
problems that are suspected to be involved with low levels of coenzyme
Q10 include irregular heart beat (arrhythmias, muscular dystrophy,
heart attack, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), AIDS/HIV,
strokes and high blood pressure.
Below is a selected list of the health benefits of CoQ10.
Heart Protection and Heart Health
There are many
clinical trials to prove
that using coenzyme Q10 significantly protects the heart both during
heart
surgery and after a heart attack.
It can help reduce angina
symptoms and is used to treat congestive heart failure in Japan.
Several studies revealed that people with heart failure have lower
levels
of CoQ10 in their heart muscle. It is now known that CoQ10 can boost
the ability of the heart to pump blood.
Energy Boost
During
vigorous exercise, the blood level of CoQ10 drops. This has led some
to wonder if taking CoQ10 supplements could improve athletic
performance.
Some studies show that taking a Q10 supplement helps to enhance athletic performance while other studies show no
benefit.
Fighting Off Cancer
There is some
evidence coming out from a research study done in Demark that CoQ10 can
fight off cancer. The study looked at 32 women suffering from breast
cancer whom were given high doses of vitamins and supplements (including
coenzyme Q10) along with standard chemotherapy drugs.
Increasing the CoQ10 dose to 390 mg per day resulted in the tumors
disappearing in two women over a three month period.
Based on this study, we would suggest that CoQ10 supplements be
included in people undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Check with your doctor about this.
Gum Health
Surprisingly,
it was revealed that gingivitis can be, in part, caused by a deficiency
in CoQ10. Gum tissue low in CoQ10 seems to be in poorer health, a major
cause of gingivitis.
Patients given 50 mg daily of CoQ10 supplement experienced less
inflammation in their gums.
Weight Loss
Studies
show that people who are obese have significantly lower levels of this
vitamin-like substance. Some believe that taking CoQ10 supplements
could boost the body's metabolism and this will help people lose weight.
We don't expect that taking CoQ10 supplement would cause significant
weight loss. It is known that obesity is a risk factor for heart
disease. So the best reason for taking CoQ10 supplement would be to protect
the heart in people who are overweight.
Bottom Line
So, what is
CoQ10 for? Total heart
and body health.
All the
research studies are providing very convincing evidence that CoQ10 is very
important for everyone to take CoQ10 supplements.
