Zinc for Men Fertility - Does It Work?

Thinking of using zinc for men fertility improvements?

zinc for men fertilityIt is known that sperm production (spermatogenesis) has a very high requirement for the mineral zinc.

Indeed, zinc deficiency in animals has shown to cause poor quality sperm formation and a lower sperm motility.

Read on to find out what clinical research has been done to show the link between zinc deficiency and poor sperm quantity and motility...

Research studies on using zinc for men fertility improvements

There are many clinical studies to draw our conclusions from. We will review three of them that point to a link between zinc deficiency and poor sperm quality.

Study #1

Effects of dietary zinc depletion on seminal volume and zinc loss, serum testosterone concentrations, and sperm morphology in young men.
Hunt CD, Johnson PE, Herbel J, Mullen LK.
Am J Clin Nutr. 1992 Jul;56(1):148-57.

It is estimated that about 40% of cases in couples not being able to conceive is due to infertility in men. These group of researchers found that zinc deficiency is common and contribute to poor sperm health.

Eleven volunteers were given zinc supplement (and zinc from their diet) ranging from 1.4 to 10.4 mg daily for 35 days.

Those taking only 1.4 mg of zinc daily had less semen volume (2.24 mL) compared to those taking 10.4 mg of zinc (who had 3.30 mL).

Moreover, taking 10.4 mg of zinc resulted in higher blood concentration of testosterone; 26.9 nmol/L versus 21.9 nmol/L in those taking just 1.4 mg of zinc.

The conclusion from this study is that a deficiency in zinc not only reduces the amount of semen per ejaculation, it also lowers testosterone levels, essential for maintaining sex drive.

Study #2

Effects of folic acid and zinc sulfate on male factor subfertility: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Wong WY, et al.
Fertil Steril. 2002 Mar;77(3):491-8.

This well-designed study involved 108 fertile men and 103 men with lower fertility.

In men with lower fertility, a supplement of 5 mg of folic acid and 66 mg of zinc resulted in a very significant 74% increase in sperm count.

This was also seen in those men with normal fertility (although the increase was not as large as in those men who were subfertile).

Note: The authors also noticed that in addition to a 74% increase in sperm count, there was a minor 4% increase in abnormal sperm cells as well. (This may or may not be a significant observation.)

Study #3

Zinc levels in seminal plasma are associated with sperm quality in fertile and infertile men.
Colagar AH, Marzony ET, Chaichi MJ.
Nutr Res. 2009 Feb;29(2):82-8.

This study further supports the theory that a low zinc level is linked to a low sperm count and poor sperm quality.

Moreover, this link not only applies to men with lower fertility, it even applies to men with normal fertility status.

What this means is that any men (even if they have normal sperm count and quality) can benefit from taking a zinc supplement or from eating foods high in zinc.

What is a suitable dose of zinc for men fertility enhancement?

Many studies have used low doses of zinc, around 10 mg daily. Many multivitamins may contain this needed amount (check the label).

However, there is little harm in taking 50 mg of zinc daily. The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for zinc in men is 11 mg daily.

Since zinc deficiency is not uncommon, it can occur with a poor diet. See Foods High in Zinc for a list of foods to consider eating to maximize zinc intake from your diet.

We suggest taking 50 mg daily to ensure sufficient supply of zinc for maintaining the health of the reproductive organs.
